We often hear actors and directors talking about how their next film is something completely new, but rarely is. Kites IS something completely new and original.
Kites was filmed in Las Vegas, Santa Fe and New Mexico. There are three languages spoken in the movie - Hindi, English and Spanish. Although we have the song and dance numbers we typically see in what we call "Bollywood movies", Kites doesn't feel like a Bollywood movie. Kites is something very different that will appeal to a much wider audience.
Kites is a fast-paced action/drama/romance about a poor, street-smart man "J" (Hrithik Roshan) who is left mortally wounded in the desert. Through flashbacks, we learn the only thing keeping "J" alive is his will to find the love of his life "Natasha" (Barbara Mori), who is engaged to a dangerous man.
As with many Indian films, we don't see any steamy loves scenes and the two fall in love rather quickly. You almost wish there was a bit more relationship building but the chemistry between "J" and "Natasha" is still tangible and their love transcends the fact that they speak different languages.
Hrithik Roshan gives his best performance to date. When you consider his past excellent performances in such films as Koi Mil Gaya and Lakshya, this speaks volumes about what he has put into Kites. Hrithik also tops himself with some of his best dance moves to date and even sings one the movie's songs, "Kites in the Sky", himself.
Barbara Mori is a Mexican soap opera star who is starring in her first Indian film. She puts in a dazzling performance as the beautiful and desperate Natasha who speaks Spanish and very little English.
In addition to the romance and occasional dancing, Kites is also very big on action. There is violence in the movie and some heart-stopping action scenes that are sure to have you on the edge of your seat. Looks like the Roshans have another big hit on their hands.
Kites is playing in theatres now.
Kites: The Remix (shorter English version) opens on May 28, 2010.
